About

GESTE Paris is an exhibition platform dedicated to the photographic and filmic "gesture" as coined by philiosopher Vilém Flusser. GESTE is the link between a private collection, works of art from prestigious galleries and a selection of guest curators and a juried open call. GESTE takes place in the intimate setting of a private classical Parisian home. Like a secret speakeasy salon it has become a recognized place to discover and meet established and emerging artists from all over the world and an opportunity to engage directly with participating artists. We host an open dialogue as part of tours and conferences.

GESTE Paris is committed to experimental processes and invites image-based artworks from outside the normal bounds of photography, including 3-D and sculptural image-based works and film and video.

GESTE Paris was founded in 2016 by Shiva Lynn Burgos, a multidisciplinary artist and curator from New York currently living and working between Paris, London and Papua New Guinea.

Her contemporary, conceptual and often collaborative practice positions itself within the unifying concepts of evolution, competition, natural and social selection. The artist is specifically concerned with how evolution presents itself biologically, architecturally and culturally. Burgos integrates field-collected and found objects with contemporary materials and technology as a resource for examining the shifting value systems of provenance in relation to currency, spirituality and custom.

Burgos’ works encompass photography, film, painting, bronze castings, sound compositions, tapestries, installation, performance as well as an ongoing passion for experimental and digital image-making to include artificial/augmented reality, 360VR, cyanotype printing and holographic imaging. Burgos explores the materiality of analog photography as an ongoing artistic practice. As a digital imaging expert, she has worked for several art departments in NYC, most notably as an exhibition designer for The Guggenheim Museums and a consultant for The Metropolitan Museum, NY.

Burgos has a long-term performative collaboration with Javier Barrera, Ned&ShivaProductions. In 2013 she formed The Mariwai Project, an artistic project and cultural exchange with the indigenous artists of Papua New Guinea who are considering contemporary forms and influences. As an initiated clan member, Burgos supports the recognition of the living cultures by creating a direct link with ethnographers and museum collections. The Mariwai Project includes philanthropic support for art, culture, health, education and development in the region.
